FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions about eSIM
1) What is eSIM & why is it becoming increasingly popular?

An eSIM (Embedded SIM) is an electronic SIM integrated into the phone's motherboard. Instead of inserting a physical SIM, users activate their eSIM profile via QR code scanning, entering a code, or transferring the eSIM directly from their old phone. eSIMs allow for flexible carrier switching, managing multiple numbers, reducing the risk of losing/losing the SIM, and helping manufacturers optimize phone design.

Convenience: Online activation, no need to cut/insert a physical SIM.

Multiple numbers: Use two numbers for work/travel simultaneously; many phones support two eSIMs operating at the same time, or a physical SIM + eSIM.

Travel: Purchase domestic/multi-country eSIM data before your flight, and have network access upon landing.

Design: No SIM tray needed → increased dust and water resistance, optimized battery/antenna space.

2) Quick Check If Your Phone Supports eSIM
On iPhone
Open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM / Add Cellular Plan.

If you see the “Add eSIM” or “Switch eSIM” option, your phone supports it.

On Android
Go to Settings → Network & Internet (or Connections → SIM Management on Samsung).

Look for “Add eSIM / Download eSIM / Set up eSIM”. If it's there, your phone supports it.

Some models have hardware support, but the eSIM feature may be disabled by region/carrier. Check the manufacturer's support page and carrier list before purchasing.

3) iOS / Apple iPhone

Support threshold: iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, or newer all support eSIM. This means that iPhone 11/12/13/14/15/16/17 and iPhone SE (Gen 2, Gen 3) all support eSIM (depending on carrier/region). Some markets (like the US) no longer have a SIM tray on iPhone 14 and later (eSIM-only). Additionally, iPhone 13 and later can use two eSIMs simultaneously (Dual eSIM). (See carrier notes before activation.)

iPhone Series Supporting eSIM Quick Notes

iPhone XS / XS Max / XR: Yes. First generation supports eSIM (requires carrier support).

iPhone 11 series: Physical SIM + eSIM (most markets).

iPhone 12 / 12 mini / 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max: Supports Dual SIM (physical SIM + eSIM); some markets enable 2 eSIMs.

iPhone 13 / 13 mini / 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max support dual eSIM functionality (depending on the carrier).

iPhone 14 / 14 Plus / 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max support eSIM-only in the US (no SIM tray). In other markets: physical SIM + eSIM.

iPhone 15 / 15 Plus / 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max support eSIM-only in the US; other markets: varies by region.

iPhone 16 / 16 Plus / 16 Pro / 16 Pro Max continue the eSIM trend; see carrier list for your country.

iPhone 17 series support eSIM; some regions may have eSIM-only depending on regulations.

iPhone SE (2020, 2022) supports eSIM even with a SIM tray (most markets).

Tip: Check the list of carriers that support eSIM for iPhones on Apple's support page for each country. If you buy a US version iPhone from iPhone 14 onwards, the device will not have a SIM tray (eSIM-only).

4) Android: eSIM support is increasing, but depends on the market.

The Android ecosystem has rapidly shifted towards eSIM. From flagships (Samsung Galaxy S/Z, Google Pixel, high-end Xiaomi) to mid-range (some FE/A-series, Redmi Note, OPPO Reno, etc.), all have eSIM-supported versions. However, the level of support varies greatly depending on the model, country of manufacture, and carrier. For example, the same model may have eSIM in the US/European version, while the domestic version in some countries may have eSIM disabled.

Before buying: check the manufacturer's support page and the list of carriers in your country.

After purchase: update the system software (One UI/Android) to activate the eSIM feature if the manufacturer has recently added it.

Dual eSIM: more and more devices allow storing multiple eSIM profiles; some devices support two eSIMs working simultaneously (depending on chipset/version/carrier).

5) Samsung Galaxy: S/Z/FE & part of Samsung A-Series

Samsung is a leader in Android eSIM coverage in the high-end segment. The Galaxy S20 → S25 and Galaxy Z Fold/Flip series all have configurations that support eSIM (regionally), along with the S23 FE / S24 FE… Some recent A-Series models (A54, A55, A35) have variants that support eSIM in certain regions (such as Europe/North America/Korea/Japan…). Note: eSIM on a specific model may be limited by sales region and firmware.
